From New York Bureau description on back: PFC Desmond T. Doss, who refused to carry a gun and spent his Saturdays praying and Bible-reading while battles raged on Leyte, Guam and Okinawa, became the hero of the 77th Division on May 12th. A conscientious objector and a Seventh-day Adventist, the 26 year old medical aid man had permission to spend every Saturday at prayer. On May 12th, he put his Bible aside and braved vicious Jap fire to save the lives of 75 wounded Yanks. PFC Doss is shown in an old snapshot with his wife, Dorothy, a schoolteacher in Norfold, VA.
